Henderson Golf Club is several miles from downtown Savannah, actually near I-95, and this is a wonderful course that is a bargain. I got a tee time just before 1:00PM and spent less than $25.00 on greens fees.

I was fortunate to get paired up with Anthony Pollard (in the white shirt), a San Diego resident who was visiting the area. Neither of us had played this course before and we repeatedly commented to each other about what great shape the course was in. The tee boxes, roughs and greens were tremendous, and while the fairways were in good shape too, they were quite dry and a bit hard. Many of my tee shots cause the dust to kick up noticeably - but the upside to that was that I was getting another 15 to 25 yards to my drives. Good news since I'm not a long ball hitter.

This course winds though neighborhoods, and the staff placed considerable emphasis on staying on the Henderson_GC_17cart paths, especially near the tee boxes and greens. There are a number of places where the cart path becomes an elevated wooden bridge through what is probably swampy ground, dried out now. Several of the holes, like the 2nd and 3rd holes and 7th and 8th holes, are separated by long stretches that could make this an uncomfortable experience for walkers. When we were finished we talked with Mr. Brown, a staffer who was manning the starter's booth, and he said that the course cart path covers seven miles. The scorecard did not contain a course layout, or even a hole by hole layout; a bit disconcerting (like that word?) for newbies to the course.

Many of the tee shots were a bit challenging, as they either went through a fairly narrow corridor of trees, demanded clearing an expanse of scrub or both. As mentioned, the greens were great. Not too fast, not too slow, but deceiving in that most of our putts did not break as much as either of us would have expected.

It was very hot, and we didn't tee off till the hottest part of the day. The water coolers were abundant around the course, so hydration was not a problem; i found that I was downing at least twenty ounces of water every two to three holes. I didn't notice seeing any porta-potties or rest rooms out there,( I always look for them) so be sure to take care of business before the round and after the first nine at the clubhouse.

The 9th and 18th greens were close together, and you approach them from opposite directions. On the 9th you approach shot will show you a green with water to the left, the approach shot on the 18th has you facing what looks like an island green (it's not, but it doesn't help you to know that.)

If you're going to visit Savannah or you live in the area and haven't played this course, you owe it to yourself to play it. You'll enjoy yourself - just like we did.
